I actually think this page should be very different from most public art websites.

Most public art websites say:

“Here are the sculptures we’ve installed.”

Your page should say:

“Here is what happened to the community because we made art together.”

That is what makes your work different. Throughout your career, you haven’t simply designed public art—you’ve facilitated conversations, built consensus, uncovered local stories, engaged residents, and helped communities see themselves differently. That’s your unique value.

I also think this page should become a resource center. Even if someone isn’t ready to hire you, they should leave inspired and informed. A city planner, arts commission member, educator, neighborhood association, or another artist should think, “I learned something valuable here. When we’re ready, Deborah is the person we want to call.”

Art That Brings Communities Together

Public art has the power to transform more than streets, parks, libraries, or buildings.

It transforms the way people feel about where they live.

The most successful public art isn’t simply installed in a community—it grows from the community itself.

Every neighborhood has stories worth telling.

Every town has traditions worth celebrating.

Every community has voices that deserve to be heard.

My role is to help uncover those stories and transform them into artwork that belongs to the people who helped create it.

For more than two decades I have collaborated with cities, schools, libraries, nonprofit organizations, developers, businesses, and community groups to create artwork that inspires pride, encourages conversation, and strengthens a sense of place.

Because the greatest public art doesn’t simply decorate a space.

It creates community.

More Than an Artist

I don’t simply design artwork.

I facilitate conversations.

I ask questions.

I listen.

I help people discover the stories they didn’t realize they shared.

Every project is different because every community is different.

Sometimes the artwork begins with a history lesson.

Sometimes it begins with children drawing pictures.

Sometimes it begins around a conference table.

Sometimes it begins with neighbors sharing memories over coffee.

The artwork becomes a reflection of those conversations.

That’s what makes each project meaningful.

One of the greatest gifts of working in public art has been the opportunity to learn from every community I’ve served.

Each project presents unique challenges.

Different personalities.

Different goals.

Different histories.

Different opportunities.

Rather than allowing those lessons to disappear when the project is complete, I’ve chosen to share them here.
